I’ve just got off of the phone with the lovely people at …. I have no idea what company, they certainly weren’t Orange that’s for sure! Its a scam, pure and simple.

The premise is this: they are phoning to offer you an upgrade to your mobile phone contract and need you to confirm your bank details with them to make this possible. To add a degree of tenuous credibility to their story, they knew that I’d bought my phone at Phones4U - but they failed (refused) to provide any more information about me to prove their identity, claiming it was “against data protection laws”. A hypocritical answer at best considering I have no recollection of ever giving anybody permission to phone and offer me free upgrades.

A quick Google for 01782673000 shows no reputable company results and turns up a very interesting discussion at WhoCallsMe.com with many users reporting multiple cold calls.

If you ever get any call of this type, from this number or any other, refuse to give them anything. I suggest having some fun with them, waste their time, wind them up - I did, it’s a great fun. Then go and report them to Ofcom and register with the Telephone Preference Service.

Have you had a call from these idiots?  Leave us a comment and let us know.

i got the same number call, I DONT TRUST THEM, better to do it face to face. Firstly they say they are fom 3 but thats all very well! but still if you had someone come to your front door you would at least ask for an I.D. badge, but you cant over the phone. They ask you to confirm details! which are (for a con-artist) details that can easily start a credit card up under your name!

This number has been calling me up to 7 times a day for the last week. Generally I have just ignored it but my new tactic is to answer it then let my non verbal son have the phone. He’s delighted to have a captive audience but the people at the other end are not so impressed by his raspberry blowing skills when they are trying to offer him a new contract! I hope they soon get the message!

oh my god, these people have been calling my mobile for days now, i never answer just for the fact that i always seem to be busy at work anyway! Which im glad about, i would never hand over details of my account over phone. I hope no one else is a fool enough to do it. glad i googled number now!

These people are persistant. I have yet to answer their calls. Glad I Googled. Fones for U seem to be the common denominator amongst mine and a few others getting these calls. Has anyone been on to Fones 4U? I guess they must be selling details on.

phones4u took my mobile number at the weekend when i went in to reserve a handset not out yet as an upgrade and lo and behond, this number keeps on ringing me at least twice a day since the day i gave my contact number to phones4u. i haven’t picked up their call yet, but glad i didnt now i’ve read this thread!!!

    Hi,

Yeah I got a call from them too. I answered and they said they were from ‘head office’ from phones4U. I didn’t have a reason to not believe them. I used to have a contract with them a couple of years ago. So, they had my name, and my previous address. They kept trying to upgrade my phone.

I should’ve been wiser, but agreed to a trial. However, I changed my mind and tried to call back the number. All I got was a recorded message from phones4U and that they will contact me. I waited but didn’t receive the handset. Luckily I still had the number on my mobile. I googled it and this is what I found. I cancelled my bank card and ordered a new one.

This was a close shave. But people said that if they have my bank account details they could still set up a direct debit with it. Is this true? Don’t they need my authorisation? BTW, they don’t have my current address.

It does seem that people from phones4U are selling customers details. Is there anyone we can complain to and raise this issue officially?

    Not happy at all!

I just had a call from them. When I answered, their phone rang and someone picked up said hello a couple of times and then hung up, hope I dont get charged for making a call when I didn’t.

Thanks for this info its v useful to know, I was going to call back but wont now! Might do the chinese menu trick and see if I can order some chinese from them!!

  14. By Chelle on May 19th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Had 3 calls from them just today, 1 yesterday. Knew it was a cold call so didn’t bother answering. Googled the number, glad I did. Defo wont be answering to them now.

Hello i am so glad someone has mentioned this number. I had the number call me today and did not recongnise the code so i googled it and the results were helpful as i had no idea this was a scam. All i can say is thank goodness i put the phone down!

A couple of hours later and i had another number call me but was 0800.. i answered and they told me they also wanted to upgrade my mobile phone but once again i failed to hold conversation with them and resulted in the phone being put down again!

Have been recieving calls from this number for days. I was asked for bank details first time I answered so I hung up immediately, since then I’ve been answering and winding them up. Phones4u has been the common connection it seems so I plan to report them to Ofcom tomorrow. Suggest you all do the same… might have some effect if enough people do it!

  17. By DanAndRia on May 21st, 2008 at 1:27 pm

  27. By Tricia on May 30th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

I have had several calls from this number earlier in the week. Answered one, cut the bloke off telling him politely but firmly that I was having my lunch and he scarpered quickly enough. No more calls over the past couple of days although I’ll not hold my breath.

Phones4u appear to be the common denominator despite some claims to the contrary. I was a customer of theirs years ago so I have asked them to remove my details. Lets see if it works.

  28. By Jeni on June 3rd, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Have had loads of calls from this number over the past couple of weeks. Told them i would think about it but would prefer to sort out my mobile phone face to face. They don’t have any of our bank details at all do they? Should i inform the bank just incase???

  29. By MARK on June 5th, 2008 at 11:11 am

I’ve had a few calls from this number in the last few days. Haven’t answered it as I’ve been to busy to speak to cold callers.
Now that I know its a scam I will definately answer it next time and have some fun!

  30. By Andy on June 6th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

I’ve just called phones4u customer services (I did buy my phone from them) and queried the above number as i too had a missed call from them, they confirmed that this number is their sales department. Why can’t people do some research before scare mongering?!

Hope this helps all those too scared to answer their phone!

    Check it yourself!

Started getting 3 or 4 calls a day from01782673000 or 01782603250. googled the number,
rang phones4u on 08000725855 (free). option 3 to reach an operator. Asked for a supervisor having explained that I didn’t even have an account with them and told them what I thought of a scheme that texts and leaves NO MESSAGE and that I wanted my number off their list NOW. result was that an email was sent to there sales desk ‘as we speak’…I also explained that I was in touch with the trading standards office and was then contacting the OFT with any subsequent calls.
Have had no calls since. Ring them and tell them what you think of them and their sad little scheme. If we all do it, they will take notice.

Try registering your number on the TPS website. The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is the central opt out register on which you can record your preference not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls to your home or mobile* telephone numbers. It is a legal requirement that all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations and political parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS unless they have your consent to do so.
